Aviation
The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Division plays a vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts from the sky. The division currently operates two helicopters: an OH-6 and an OH-58. These helicopters, originally used by the military, are similar to civilian models known as the Hughes 369A and the Bell Jet Ranger.
Since the late 1970s, the Sheriff’s Office has used aircraft to assist in public safety, including previous helicopters like the Bell 47 and UH-1 Huey, and even a small airplane. The current helicopters were acquired through federal programs that help local agencies access former military equipment.
Supporting Law Enforcement from the Air
These helicopters are used for a wide range of missions, including helping locate missing persons or suspects, monitoring traffic, and providing a bird’s-eye view during emergencies or large events. Their support is available at no cost to any law enforcement agency in Harrison County or the surrounding areas.
Each aircraft is equipped with advanced tools like search lights, high-powered cameras, and radios to coordinate with officers on the ground. This aerial support helps keep the community safer by adding an extra layer of visibility and response capability that ground units alone can’t always provide.
